KMUA is an IRC 501(c) organization classified as a business league which can conduct lobbying activities.
A business league is defined as an association of persons having a common business interest, whose purpose is to promote the common interest and not to engage in "for-profit" business. Its activities are directed to the improvement of business conditions of one or more lines of business. A "not-for-profit" association can have net earnings in the form of excess of income over expenses but it cannot issue stock that carries dividends.
KMUA operates under a set of approved By-Laws. KMUA also abides by the Open-Records Law and the Open Meetings Law of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
